INTRODUCTION: As the population ages and more patients experience medical emergencies during dental treatments, dentists must competently and confidently manage these situations. We developed a simulation training course for medical emergencies in the dental setting using an inexpensive vital sign simulation app for smartphones/tablets without the need for an expensive simulator. However, the duration for which this effect is maintained is unclear. This study was performed to evaluate the long-term educational effect at 3, 6, and 12 months after taking the course. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine dental residents participated in this course. Scenarios included vasovagal syncope, anaphylaxis, hyperventilation syndrome, and acute coronary syndrome, each of which the participants had to diagnose and treat. The participants were evaluated using a checklist for anaphylaxis diagnosis and treatment skills immediately after and 3, 6, and 12 months after the course. The participants were also surveyed about their confidence in diagnosing and treating these conditions by questionnaire before, immediately after, and 3, 6, and 12 months after the course. RESULTS: The checklist scores for anaphylaxis were significantly lower at 3, 6, and 12 months after the course than immediately after the course. The percentage of participants who provided a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment for vasovagal syncope, hyperventilation syndrome, and acute coronary syndrome was lower at all reassessments than immediately after the course. CONCLUSION: Because medical emergency management skills and confidence declined within 3 months, it would be useful to introduce a refresher course approximately 3 months after the initial course to maintain skills and confidence.

INTRODUCTION: To assess the feasibility of a realistic model for learning oral flaps using 3D printing technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mould was designed to reproduce the mandibular gingival mucosa, and a mandibular model was created using a three-dimensional printer for training undergraduate students to perform gingival flaps. After a short interview about its use, the participants were asked to use the simulator and provide feedback using a 5-point Likert questionnaire. RESULTS: The 3D-printed oral surgery flap training model was practical and inexpensive. The model was very realistic, educational and useful for hands-on training. CONCLUSIONS: 3D printing technology offers new possibilities for training in dental treatments that are currently difficult to replicate. The use of this simulator for oral flap surgery was well-received and considered promising by the participants.

INTRODUCTION: When dental institutions had to close down during the Movement Control Order (MCO) implementation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, dental students were faced with delays in completing their tobacco cessation schedule. An alternative was to allow students to conduct virtual counselling (VC) for smoking cessation for their patients to address their clinical requirements. This study aimed to explore Malaysian dental undergraduates' and patients' experiences undergoing smoking cessation counselling through virtual platforms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study consisted of qualitative, semi-structured Focus Group Discussions (for students, n = 23) and in-depth interviews (for patients, n = 9); to phenomenologically describe the perceptions of participants involved in the VC. Each session was recorded with the participants' permission. The recorded session was transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed using the qualitative data analysis software, NVivo™. RESULTS: The major themes that emerged were: (1) General opinions and experiences, (2) Content of VCs, (3) Remote access to counselling, (4) Patient-clinician relationships, (5) Technical issues, (6) Changes after VCs, and (7) Future application. Most students and patients were quite comfortable with VC as it is convenient, allowing students to be creative and avoid the hassle of transport and traffic. However, some of the students felt that it lacked the personal touch and guidance from lecturers who would normally be present during physical class. CONCLUSION: Virtual counselling enables remote access to counselling, but it is also subjected to some limitations, especially regarding lack of clinical assessments, human touch and internet issues. Though participants were optimistic about adapting it in the future, multiple factors must be considered. Ultimately, the behavioural change will depend on the patient's motivation in making a difference.

INTRODUCTION: Analysis of the diversity of reading lists on courses offered by universities is one way to assess what is being taught and how it shapes our understanding of the world. Very little work has been carried out so far within dentistry on decolonising the curriculum. Existing work looks at the representation of women or ethnic minorities but not at the dental curriculum per se. This article starts to address this. METHODS: The reading lists within the 5 year Bachelor of Dental Surgery curriculum in a large UK dental school were collected and assessed. A data extraction spreadsheet was developed and journal articles on every course reading list across the 5 year curriculum were read in detail. Information on authorship and author affiliations, alongside patient and population representation within the article itself, were collected and collated. RESULTS: We found that there are 2.5 times more male authors than female authors, and almost three times more male lead authors in the articles evaluated. The majority of journal articles included in the reading lists are written by academics and/or clinicians affiliated with institutions in the United Kingdom and most articles are from the global north. In addition, 65% of articles do not specify the focus patient or population group studied. DISCUSSION: It is unlikely that current reading lists within dentistry fully reflect the composition of the profession itself, the variety of knowledge needed to provide evidence-based practice in a globalised oral health arena or the heterogeneous nature of the patient population.

RESUMO

Bariatric dentistry is the branch of dental medicine focused on preventive and comprehensive oral health care of overweight or obese patients. Obesity is an increasing US and international health problem and is a condition characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the adipose tissue and is categorized by body mass index (BMI) according to the World Health Organization (WHO). With the increase of morbid obesity worldwide and the unfavorable effect on the overall health and life expectancy, it is necessary that proper accommodations are made for accessible dental care of this vulnerable population of patients. The following case report details the emergency and the subsequent elective dental treatment of a patient with a morbid obesity and demonstrates the importance of necessary equipment, a multidisciplinary approach, and broad networking communication needed to treat bariatric patients. The aim of the present case report was to bring awareness and start professional discussions on the importance of dental practitioners in the community and dental academic programs working together to assure access for primary oral health for bariatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: An evaluation was made of the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the Consultation and Relational Empathy Measure (CARE) to assess relational empathy in undergraduate dental students. In addition, the influence of demographic, socio-economic and consultation-related factors upon the degree of perceived empathy and overall satisfaction was studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in patients seen in the Oral Surgery Unit by fourth year dental students. Dentists, specialized translators and psychologists developed the translation of the questionnaire. After a pilot test, a convenience sample of patients was included. Construct validity was tested by factor analysis using principal component analysis with varimax rotation and Kaiser standardization, and internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's α. RESULTS: Two pilot tests were carried out with a panel of experts until the final version of the questionnaire was established. In the validation stage, 191 patients participated (92 men and 99 women), with a mean age of 52.5 ± 17 years. The mean score of the CARE measure was 47.2 ± 4.4, and 57.6% of the patients (n = 110) reported the maximum score on the questionnaire. The final version showed a 1-factor solution explaining 68.6% of the total variance, with excellent final internal consistency (α = 93.4%). CONCLUSION: The Spanish version of the CARE measure affords high reliability and validity in assessing relational empathy in dental students. Perceived empathy is related to overall satisfaction. Patient demographics and the number of visits do not influence perceived empathy.

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to determine satisfaction level with the quality of education among dental students and dentists in Croatia based on the acquired knowledge and clinical and soft skills. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 533 dentists and dental students. The questionnaire consisted of four sections with closed-ended questions. The first section included personal and professional data, whereas the second to fourth sections assessed satisfaction with learned basic dental, professional technical or clinal and interpersonal social or soft skills on a 5-point Likert scale. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U-test and linear regression analysis. The significance level was set at .05. RESULTS: When comparing satisfaction scores between dentists and dental students in terms of basic dental knowledge and skills learned, students showed higher satisfaction scores for the categories of "Emergency Medical Situations" (p = .005) and "Ergonomic Principles of Work" (p = .004). Dentists, on the other hand, showed higher satisfaction for the categories "Selection and use of local anaesthetics and local antibiotics" (p = .005, p = .026; respectively). For the type of technical skills from the different areas of dentistry, dentists were most satisfied with "Oral Surgery" (4.26 ± 0.85), while students were most satisfied with "Oral Medicine" (4.29 ± 0.89). Finally, when comparing satisfaction scores with social skills, dentists had lower satisfaction scores in all categories studied (p ≤ .05). CONCLUSION: Dental students showed higher overall satisfaction than dentists. The most significant satisfaction was expressed in technical skills learned, and the most considerable dissatisfaction was recorded in the unmeasurable skills category focused on "Career management".

INTRODUCTION: The ability to perform uncomplicated tooth extractions is a core clinical skill in undergraduate dental education. The aim of this study was to evaluate pre-extraction assessment skills of dental students and interns and explore their self-perceived confidence in performing these tooth extractions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey investigated the self-perceived confidence to perform the extraction for a set of eight expert-rated cases. The participants were dental students at three different stages, that is, in Years 4 and 5 of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme and interns. The participants were asked to rate the difficulty level of each of the eight tooth extraction cases. The self-perceived confidence of the participants to perform extraction of each was also explored. Finally, the participants were asked to identify the main reason for the perceived lack of confidence. RESULTS: A total of 199 responded to the survey, yielding a response rate of 94.7%. The effect of grade of extraction (the expert rating of cases) and stage of education on difficulty ratings was assessed using a mixed three stage of education × 4-grade ANOVA, with response (Difficult = 1, Easy = 0) as the dependent variable. The results showed that there was a correlation between the stage of education and grade of extraction and affected the self-perceived confidence of the participants. Gender showed a significant impact with females categorizing significantly more cases as difficult. A three-way contingency table (counts of each confidence-level response by stage of education by expert rating of cases) suggests a statistically significant association between the three factors. Most participants identified limited clinical exposure as the main reason for their perceived lack of confidence. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study show that a majority of the participants were able to recognize tooth extraction cases which were beyond the scope of their training stage with females reporting a lower confidence. Increased clinical exposure to a wider range of tooth extraction cases with varying levels of difficulty may contribute to improving the self-confidence of undergraduate dental students and interns.

Aim: Burnout syndrome describes the state of long-term physical, emotional and mental exhaustion related to work. This syndrome can cause health problems related to stress, insomnia, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases, including an increase in alcohol consumption and drug use. It is important to recognize the presence of the initial signs of this syndrome, therefore this study aimed to determine the prevalence of the burnout syndrome in peruvian dental students. Methods: The study was observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive. It was carried out from September to November 2018, and it included a total of 154 dental students of four universities of La Libertad region, surveyed by census method. Three were private universities and one was public. Burnout was evaluated through the Maslach Burnout Student Survey Questionnaire (MBI-SS). The results were presented in absolute and percentage frequencies, as well as confidence intervals, using double-entry tables. Results: It was found that 24.68% of the students (24.71% in male students and 24.64% in female students) presented burnout syndrome. The public university of Trujillo presented the highest percentage of affected students (47.37%). A prevalence of 53,90% of emotional exhaustion was also found among the students under evaluation. Conclusions: Almost a quarter of the students surveyed presented burnout. It was also observed that the public University of Trujillo had a higher percentage of burnout than the three private ones. The percentage of prevalence of the burnout syndrome according to sex was similar. However according to dimensions, emotional exhaustion presented the highest percentage

Aim: Like other fields of health, the main focus in dentistry has shifted from treatment to prevention of diseases. Parents have a vital role in deciding about their children's oral health issues. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of four educational methods (including printed pamphlets, digital pamphlets, faceto-face education, and educational films) in increasing the awareness of parents about preventive orthodontic treatments. Methods: The study samples were selected from patients who were referred to the Pediatric Dentistry Department. 150 parents of children between 4-12 years old participated in the study. They filled out a questionnaire including demographic data and knowledge about orthodontic problems and their early treatments. Then they were divided into five groups (control, printed pamphlet, digital pamphlet, face-to-face, educational films) and after one month they repeated the test. Results: A total of 102 fathers and 48 mothers were evaluated. There was no statistical difference between different ages, sex, or income in terms of their awareness, but the awareness score between educational groups was different. There has been observed a significant increase in the awareness level of all four groups (except the control group) (P < 0.05). The highest score was seen in the video group. The difference between printed pamphlets and digital pamphlets was not significant. Conclusions: The results indicate that educational films are the most effective way of increasing awareness about preventive orthodontic treatments

Los entrenadores desempeñan un rol fundamental en la prevención de afecciones bucodentales desde el contexto deportivo. El objetivo es identificar las necesidades educativas sobre prevención de afecciones bucodentales, en entrenadores de deportes de combate. Se desarrolló un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal durante el mes de marzo del 2022 en la EIDE Provincial «Lino Salabarría Pupo» de Sancti Spíritus. La población estuvo conformada por los 30 entrenadores de los deportes de combate; se seleccionó una muestra probabilística y aleatoria simple de 15 entrenadores. Se utilizó una encuesta diseñada por los autores y la estadística descriptiva. Se evidenció una insuficiente preparación de los entrenadores en la prevención de afecciones bucodentales y condiciones del área deportiva. Además, la mayoría percibe su preparación en relación con estos temas como, regular. Se demuestra así, la necesidad de la preparación de los entrenadores deportivos en la prevención de afecciones bucodentales a través de la superación profesional.


Coaches play a fundamental role in the prevention of oral conditions from the sports context. The objective is to identify educational needs on the prevention of oral conditions in combat sports coaches. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on March 2022 at "Lino Salabarría Pupo" Provincial EIDE in Sancti Spíritus. The population was made up of 30 combat sports coaches; a simple random and probabilistic sample of 15 coaches was selected. A survey designed by the authors and descriptive statistics were used. Insufficient preparation of the coaches in the prevention of oral conditions and conditions of the sports area was evidenced. In addition, most of them perceive as regular their preparation in relation to these issues. The preparation of sports coaches in the prevention of oral conditions through professional improvement is a necessity.

A violência contra a mulher é um fenômeno social complexo que traz danos reais à saúde das vítimas, incluindo o trauma facial, cuja abordagem deveser feita porcirurgiões-dentistas devidamente capacitados para atuar neste cenário. Objetivo:Analisar a conduta e percepção dos acadêmicos do terceiro ao quinto ano do curso de Odontologia de uma Faculdade privada do Recife-PE frente aos casos de violência contra a mulher. Metodologia:Tratou-se de um estudo descritivo e exploratório, sem intenção de generalizar os resultados para outros universos, realizado com estudantes do terceiro ao quinto ano cuja coleta de dados ocorreu entre setembro e outubro de2020, através de um questionário eletrônico encaminhado através dos grupos de Whatsapp.Resultados:Boa parte dos estudantes já presenciou algum caso de violência contra mulher (44,1%). Para eles, as causas da violência são impunidade (61,0%), dependênciaquímica e alcóolica (55,9%) e problemas psiquiátricos (54,2%), como também machismo (11,9%). A maioria (96,6%) afirmou que mulheres são mais acometidas e 72,9% consideram que cabeça e pescoço são as regiões maisafetadas. A maioria (61,0%) afirmater recebido orientação sobre como agir por algum meio de comunicação (45,8%) e 10,2% receberam orientação na graduação. Alguns alunos (3,4%) afirmaram já ter identificado casos de violência contra a mulher na clínica da faculdade. Entretanto, 44,1% afirmaram não saber do que se trata uma notificação compulsória. Conclusões:Os estudantes de Odontologia reconhecem as mulheres como as principais vítimas da violência, consideram que a cabeça e o pescoço são as regiões mais afetadas, sendo necessários os registros documentais das lesões examinadas e do atendimento efetuado para que laudos e prontuários possam ser utilizados como prova (AU).


Violence against women is a complex social phenomenon that brings real damage to the health of victims, including facial trauma, which must be addressed by dentists who are duly trained to act in this scenario. Objective:To analyze the conduct and perception of students from the third to fifth year of the Dentistry course at a private college in Recife-PE regarding cases of violence against women. Methodology:This was just a descriptive and exploratory study, with no intention of generalizing the results to other universes, carried out with students from the third to the fifth year whose data collection took place between September and October 2020, through an electronic questionnaire sent through the groups from Whatsapp. Results:For them, the causes of violence are impunity (61.0%), chemical and alcoholic dependence (55.9%) and psychiatric problems (54.2%), as well as machismo (11.9%). The majority (96.6%) stated that women are more affected and 72.9% consider that the head and neck are the most affected regions. Most (61.0%) claim to have received guidance on how to act through some means of communication (45.8%) and 10.2% received guidance during graduation. Some students (3.4%) stated that they had already identified cases of violence against women at the university clinic. However, 44.1% said they did not know what a compulsory notification was about. Conclusions:Dentistry students recognize women as the main victims of violence, considering that the head and neck are the most affected regions, requiring documentary records of the injuries examined and the care provided so that reports and medical records can be used as evidence (AU).

A realização da jornada acadêmica contribui para a formação dos estudantes, já que são encontros anuais promovidos pelos alunos universitários com o objetivo de trazer temas emergentes, com intuito de promover a formação integral desses futuros profissionais. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a opinião dos alunos do curso de Odontologia acerca da 43° Jornada Acadêmica da Universidade de Itaúna. O evento foi desenvolvido na Universidade de Itaúna-MG. A Metodologia da pesquisa foi realizada por meio de questionários distribuídos no último dia do evento, o que propiciou a coleta de dados dos participantes, os quais manifestaram seus pontos de vista em relação à jornada acadêmica. Os dados foram tabulados em uma planilha do Excel e analisados utilizando-se as ferramentas estatísticas do software SPSS- Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, for Windows® versão 20.0. Foram geradas tabelas de frequência e análise descritiva das variáveis. Resultados mostraram que dos 231 participantes, 162 (70,1%) afirmaram que a programação da Jornada Acadêmica Odontológica atende a todos os períodos da graduação; 177 (76,6%) achou os temas abordados interessantes; 176 (76,2%) preferirem que palestras e cursos deveriam acontecer de forma simultânea; 194 (84%) acharam relevante a apresentação de banner durante o evento; 93 (40,3%) responderam que os três dias de Jornada Acadêmica são suficientes, não sendo necessário o acréscimo de dias e 132 (57,1%) que avaliaram como ótimo o evento. Concluiu-se que essa Jornada é importante para trazer novas experiências aos profissionais e atualizações do mercado de trabalho, ampliando conhecimentos, habilidades e atitudes dentro da instituição.


The holding of the academic day contributes to the training of students, as they are annual meetings promoted by university students with the aim of bringing up emerging themes, with the aim of promoting the integral training of these future professionals. The objective of this study is to evaluate the opinion of students of the Dentistry course about the 43rd Academic Journey of the University of Itaúna. The event was held at the University of Itaúna-MG. The research methodology was carried out through questionnaires distributed on the last day of the event, which allowed the collection of data from the participants, who expressed their points of view in relation to the academic journey. Data were tabulated in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using the statistical tools of the SPSS- Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, for Windows® version 20.0. Frequency tables and descriptive analysis of the variables were generated. Results showed that of the 231 participants, 162 (70.1%) stated that the Academic Dental Journey schedule covers all graduation periods; 177 (76.6%) found the topics covered interesting; 176 (76.2%) preferred that lectures and courses should take place simultaneously; 194 (84%) thought the banner display during the event was relevant; 93 (40.3%) answered that the three days of the Academic Day are enough, not being necessary to add more days and 132 (57.1%) who evaluated the event as excellent. It was concluded that this Journey is important to bring new experiences to professionals and updates in the labor market, expanding knowledge, skills and attitudes within the institution.

Objetivo: verificar o conhecimento de acadêmicos de Odontologia de uma instituição de ensino superior da Paraíba acerca da avulsão dentária. Métodos: foi realizado um estudo transversal, no qual 64 acadêmicos responderam um formulário com perguntas objetivas relativas a dados sociodemográficos, período de formação do curso e conhecimento e condutas em casos de avulsão dentária. Foi realizada análise descritiva de frequência absoluta e relativa dos dados (SPSS, v. 20.0). Resultados: a maioria dos acadêmicos recebeu informações sobre avulsão dentária em aulas ministradas no curso (86%) e indicaria a irrigação com soro fisiológico seguida de reimplante quando da ocorrência do trauma há menos de uma hora (64,1%) e há mais de uma hora (43,8%). O tratamento endodôntico foi indicado, independentemente do tempo do dente fora do alvéolo, por 34,4% da amostra. A contenção rígida foi a mais indicada para o dente reimplantado (48,4%) e seu tempo mínimo de proservação radiográfica respondido pela maioria dos pesquisados foi de 6 meses (48,4%). Conclusões: apesar de a maioria dos acadêmicos ter recebido informações acerca da temática, o conhecimento foi considerado insuficiente em relação a condutas referentes ao reimplante dentário, indicação do tratamento endodôntico, tipo de contenção e tempo de proservação.


Objective: to verify the knowledge of dental students from a Higher Education Institution of Paraíba about dental avulsion. Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out, in which 64 students answered a form with objective questions regarding sociodemographic data, course period, knowledge and conduct in cases of tooth avulsion. Descriptive analysis of absolute and relative frequency of data was performed (SPSS, v. 20.0). Results: most students received information about dental avulsion during the graduation classes (86%) and would indicate irrigation with saline solution followed by reimplantation when the trauma occurred less than one hour (64.1%) and more than one hour (43.8%). Endodontic treatment was indicated, regardless of the time the tooth was out of the dental socket, according 34.4% of the sample. Rigid retention was the most indicated for the reimplanted tooth (48.4%) and six months was the minimum radiographic follow-up time answered by most students (48.4%). Conclusions: although most students have received information about the topic, the knowledge was considered insufficient in relation to some aspects of the protocols recommended for emergency care for dental avulsion, with emphasis on behaviors related to dental reimplantation, indication of endodontic treatment, type of containment and follow-up.

RESUMO

Objetivo: avaliar do conhecimento dos alunos de odontologia sobre os protocolos de atendimento para as urgências endodônticas. Método: 182 alunos dos últimos anos do curso de Odontologia do Centro Universitário Doutor Leão Sampaio, responderam a um questionário contendo perguntas referente ao protocolo adotado em casos de urgência de origem endodôntica. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste de Qui-quadrado de Pearson (p<0,05). Resultados: foram observadas diferenças entre a conduta relata pelos alunos do quarto e quinto ano de graduação quanto a indicação da incisão para drenagem em abscesso periapical agudo submucoso (evoluído), indicação de antibióticos nos casos de flare-up e indicação de antibióticos na dor com edema póstratamento endodôntico. A prescrição de antibióticos foi excessiva para os casos de dor entre consultas (flareup) e dor no pós-operatória. Para as patologias da polpa, a maioria dos alunos indicou protocolos de urgência recomendados na literatura. Conclusão: os resultados indicam a necessidade de melhoria dos programas de treinamento dos alunos em urgências endodônticas, principalmente quanto aos protocolos farmacológicos. (AU)


Objective: to evaluate the knowledge of dentistry students about care protocols for endodontic emergencies. Method: 182 students from the last years of the Dentistry course at Doctor Leão Sampaio University Center answered a questionnaire containing questions regarding the protocol adopted in urgent cases of endodontic origin. Data were analyzed using Pearson's Chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: differences were observed between the conduct reported by fourth- and fifth-year undergraduate students regarding the indication of incision for drainage in submucosal acute periapical abscess (evolved), indication of antibiotics in cases of flare-up and indication of antibiotics in pain with edema after endodontic treatment. The prescription of antibiotics was excessive for cases of pain between appointments (flare-up) and postoperative pain. For pulp pathologies, most students indicated emergency protocols recommended in the literature. Conclusion: the results indicate the need to improve student training programs in endodontic emergencies, especially regarding pharmacological protocols. (AU)

BACKGROUND: Many studies show a higher prevalence of back pain for dentists and dental students than in the general population. This leads to a need to integrate an effective back pain prevention program (BPPP) into the student's curriculum. We have implemented such a program for 10 years, and the objective was to evaluate its effectiveness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 102 dentists and students who benefited from the BPPP were collected. Back pain prevalence and its intensity (0-10 scale) regarding neck, upper back and lower back location were studied, as well as sex, age, implementation or not of elements of the BPPP into daily practice, and if so at what moment of the professional life. For identical items, answers were compared with those from a national survey conducted amongst French students and practitioners in 2018. RESULTS: Amongst the BPPP beneficiaries, 60% were suffering from chronic back pain versus 77% in the previous national survey (p < .001). Mean pain intensity was lower in each location for the BPPP beneficiaries on the 0-10 scale: neck 1.91 vs. 2.40 (p = .05); upper back 1.94 vs. 2.72 (p < .001); lower back 2.26 vs. 2.67 (p = .15). Respondents who implemented elements of the BPPP from the start of their clinical practice showed a prevalence of chronic back pain of 48.4%, against 77% for respondents who did so only from the first year or after (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Our BPPP seems to show a positive preventive effect on dentists and students after a 10-year implementation. It is a solid basis that can however be further improved.

BACKGROUND: Many studies demonstrated that surgical guides might reduce discrepancies compared with freehand implant placement. This randomized crossover study aimed to assess the effects of approaches, practitioners' experience and learning sequences on the accuracy of single tooth implantation via digital registration method. No similar study was found. METHODS: This in vitro randomized crossover study enrolled 60 novice students (Group S) and 10 experienced instructors (Group I). Sixty students were randomly and evenly assigned to two groups (Group SA and SB). In Group SA, 30 students first performed single molar implant on a simulation model freehand (Group SAFH), and then with a CAD/CAM surgical guide (Group SASG). In Group SB, another 30 students first performed guided (Group SBSG) and then freehand (Group SBFH). Ten instructors were also divided into Group IAFH/IASG (n = 5) and IBSG/IBFH (n = 5) following the same rules. The accuracy of implant placement was assessed by the coronal and apical distance (mm) and angular (°) deviations using the digital registration method. T tests and nonparametric tests were used to compare the results among different groups of approaches, experience and sequences. RESULTS: For students, the coronal and apical distance and the angular deviations were significantly lower in surgical guide group than freehand group in total and in learning freehand first subgroup, but for learning surgical guide first subgroup the apical distance deviation showed no significant difference between two approaches. For students, the angular deviation of freehand group was significantly lower in learning surgical guide first group than learning freehand first group. For instructors, the coronal and apical distance and angular deviations showed no significant difference between two approaches and two sequences. For freehand approach, the coronal and apical distance and the angular deviations were significantly higher in student group than instructor group, while not significantly different between two groups for surgical guide approach. CONCLUSIONS: For novices, using a surgical guide for the first implant placement may reduce the potential deviations compared with freehand surgery, and may reach a comparable accuracy with that of specialists. For simple single molar implantation, the surgical guide may not be significantly helpful for experienced specialists.

PURPOSE: To investigate the content and criterion validity, and reliability of longitudinal clinical assessment of undergraduate dental student clinical competence by determining patterns of clinical performance and comparing them with validated standalone undergraduate examinations. METHODS: Group-based trajectory models tracking students' clinical performance over time were produced from LIFTUPP© data for three dental student cohorts (2017-19; n = 235) using threshold models based on the Bayesian information criterion. Content validity was investigated using LIFTUPP© performance indicator 4 as the threshold for competence. Criterion validity was investigated using performance indicator 5 to create distinct trajectories of performance before linking and cross-tabulating trajectory group memberships with a 'top 20%' performance in the final Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) examinations. Reliability was calculated using Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: Threshold 4 models showed all students followed a single upward trajectory in all three cohorts, showing clear progression in competence over three clinical BDS years. A threshold 5 model produced two distinct trajectories, and in each cohort a 'better performing' trajectory was identified. Students allocated to the 'better performing' trajectories scored higher on average in the final examinations for cohort 2 (29% vs 18% (BDS4); 33% vs. 15% (BDS5)) and cohort 3 (19% vs. 16% (BDS4); 21% vs. 16% (BDS5)). Reliability for the undergraduate examinations was high for all three cohorts (≥0.8815) and did not change appreciably when longitudinal assessment was included. CONCLUSIONS: There is some evidence to support that longitudinal data have a degree of content and criterion validity for assessing the development of clinical competence in undergraduate dental students, which should increase confidence in decisions based on these data. The findings also provide a good foundation for subsequent research.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to describe the fabrication, implementation and evaluation of 3D-printed patient-specific models for unskilled students to enhance learning in immediate implant procedures and provisionalization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The individualized simulation models were designed and processed based on CT and digital intraoral scanning of a patient. Thirty students performed simulation implant surgery and provisionalized the implant sites on the models and answered questionnaires to assess their perceptions before and after the training. The scores of the questionnaires were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: Significant differences before and after training were found in the students' responses. Students reported better results in understanding of surgical procedures, knowledge in prosthetically driven implantology, understanding of minimally invasive tooth extraction, confirming the accuracy of surgical template, usage of the guide rings and usage of the surgical cassette after simulation training. The overall expenditure on the simulation training involving 30 students amounted to 342.5 USD. CONCLUSIONS: The patient-specific and cost-efficient 3D printed models are helpful for students to improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Such individualized simulation models have promising application prospects.
